Starting in September two roommates and I will be living in Manhattan on about $220/week each. We’ve looked at some apartments and found that shares are about $500/month, so that leaves us with about $380/month for everything else. Assuming we eat at home most nights and avoid extravagances, how much money would we generally be spending on groceries a week?

I don’t know prices in manhattan but in the San Francisco Bay Area, I spend $150.00 per week for 7 people.

Specifically, how long would it take to drive from Lower manhattan (Greenwich Village area) to JFK airport on a weeknight around or after midnight? What kind of traffic should I expect to encounter?

Yangie, there is no sense for you to drive from the Village to JFK. Take a cab to Penn Station and any eastbound LIRR, except the Port Washington Branch from Penn Station to Jamaica.

Once at Jamaica, transfer to the Airtrain, which will take you from there to all the terminal.

The one way off peak fare on the LIRR will cost you $5.25 and the fare on the Airtrain is $5.
